Sue Stevenson
Instructor and Performer
Music started to be my companion when, at age 10, I blew across the flute and my band director said, "you've got the chops, kid!" I can't tell you how important that music teacher was to me, as an awkward and insecure sixth-grader. That teacher gave me the confidence to keep playing and learning music. He single-handedly shaped the beginning of my friendship with music while fostering a more disciplined way of thinking that set me up for success in so many areas of my life! I know my parents were very grateful I had such a special teacher in my life, especially in middle school! I was part of something bigger than just playing the flute. Music was my constant companion, no matter what joys and difficulties life was throwing my way.

Fast forward MANY years later... I went on to study music in college and graduate school (click here to see my formal training and credentials), then began teaching privately shortly thereafter. Over the years, I have also really enjoyed playing in ensembles, bands, and orchestras, as well as teaching masterclasses and working with students of all ages.

I not only play and teach music, but am a wife and mother to five children. To know me is to know my dedication to my family. They have all been a great support in my teaching and performing endeavors throughout the years. To know me is also to know my great love of animals. Often my two fluffy, large dogs join in on my students' lessons and love to be petted by them. And who doesn't have a free-range rabbit? Fritz the bunny brings a lot of calm to some of my younger students. Bob, the cat just likes to slap the piano keys whenever he gets the chance.

Currently, I am playing with the Bethel Symphony Orchestra, developing a flute podcast, and continuing to teach students in my studio and throughout the community.

"Sue was the reason I stayed in band all through high school! She always found music I was interested in and gave me the motivation to improve every week." - Holly R
"I highly recommend Sue for flute lessons! She is a gifted flute musician and instructor. In the six years she taught my daughter, she was a breeze to work with and her passion for flute made my daughter's lessons challenging and fun! She was worth every penny." - Sara R

"Sue was always challenging me to improve my flute tone and my technique and unlearn some old habits. She did this by demonstrating or explaining concepts in various ways until I understood. I felt very at ease and calm playing at my lessons.
